DNA (Deoxyribo Nucleic Acid, 데옥시리보핵산, 디옥시리보 핵산)는 뉴클레오타이드의 중합체인 두 개의 긴 가닥이 서로 꼬여있는 이중나선 구조로 되어있는 고분자화합물이다.

뉴클레오타이드(영어: nucleotide)는 뉴클레오사이드와 인산으로 구성된 유기 분자이다. 뉴클레오타이드는 중합체인 핵산의 단위체이다. 디옥시리보핵산(DNA)과 리보핵산(RNA)은 모두 지구 상의 모든 생명체에 필수적인 생체분자이다.

우리가 일반적으로 DNA를 생명활동에서 유전적 정보를 전달하는 전달자로서의 역할이 아닌 하나의 물리적 재료서 사용한다. 특히 DNA 나노기술에서는 DNA가 가지고 있는 주요 특성인 분자인식(molecular recognition)과 핵산의 특징을 이용하여 새로운 물질을 만드는데 목표를 둔다. 좁은 의미에서 DNA를 다루지만 넓게는 이와 동일한 원리를 이용하여 RNA나 PNA를 다루어 핵산 나노기술(nucleic acid nanotechnology)라고 불리기도 한다.
